Born in 1943 in Labasa, Subramani is one of Fiji’s leading prose fiction writers, essayists, and critics. His reputation rests on a signal collection of short stories, the

Fantasy Eaters

(1988, with a new edition forthcoming, 2013-14), a work of critical essays,

South Pacific Literature

(1985, 1992), and a novel in Fiji Hindi titled

Dauka Puraan

(2001). Apart from these major works, Subramani has also been a significant speech writer and essayist on matters of social concern such as multiculturalism, education, and film.

In colonial Fiji (Fiji only gained full independence in 1970), it was difficult for young people, Indigenous or indenture-descended, to gain a good education except if they showed exceptional merit. Still, people of Subramani’s generation did sometimes overcome these
