Hasan Shahid Suhrawardy, to use the full name of the subject of this entry, was an all-round man of letters who deserves a place of honour in the annals of modern Anglophone literary culture. A talented poet, the first in South Asia to exhibit modernist influences, a discerning critic of art and literature, a theatre producer, a translator, a polyglot cosmopolitan at home in the artistic circles of some of the major cities of Europe and Asia, an official and a diplomat, a gourmet, and an engaging conversationalist, he was also witness to the most dramatic historical events of the twentieth century, the two World Wars, the Russian Revolution, and the Partition of India.
