The French Romantic poet, playwright, novelist and member of the Académie française Alfred de Vigny was born on 27 March 1797 in Loches, Indre-et-Loire into a revolutionary political moment. His father, Léon-Pierre de Vigny (1737-1816), Chevalier de Saint-Louis, was a former infantry captain wounded in the Seven Years War (1756-1763), and his mother was Marie-Jeanne-Amélie de Baraudin (1757-1837). Both families belonged to the nobility: Beauce on the paternal side, Touraine on the maternal side. Alfred de Vigny was the fourth and only remaining child, the first three sons having died shortly after birth in 1791, 1793 and 1795.
