The English clergyman, poet, critic, and educator Joseph Warton was born in Dunsfold, Surrey, in April 1722 to the Reverend Thomas Warton (1688–1745) and Elizabeth Warton, née Richardson (1691–1762). The family soon moved to Hampshire, where his father became vicar of Basingstoke and master of the grammar school, which Joseph attended. Joseph’s younger siblings, Jane (1724–1809) and Thomas (1728–90), were also both writers, the latter becoming poet laureate in 1785. From 1736, Warton was educated at Winchester College, where he became friends with William Collins (1721–59); he then entered Oriel College, Oxford, graduating in 1742.
