Jean Watson was born in Whangarei on 28 October 1933 and grew up on a farm in the vicinity. She later moved to Wellington as a young woman, making a living as a freelance writer. She obtained a degree in religious studies from Victoria University of Wellington. It was while she was a student at Victoria University that she met Barry Crump, who would later achieve iconic status as a bushman and writer, and began a liaison with him. Crump was then married to Martina (Tina) Beatrice Anso and had two sons from the marriage. This marriage was dissolved in 1960.
