Leonard Sidney Woolf was born on 25 November 1880, the third of ten children born to Solomon Rees Sidney Woolf and Marie Woolf (née de Jongh). Woolf described in his autobiography
Sowing(1960) the moment of his birth as a sudden, possibly meaningless, emergence from non-existence to existence; however, his arrival to the nursery at 101 Lexham Gardens, Kensington, was indeed precipitated by some element of chance. Marie de Jongh first married Albert Goldstücker at age seventeen only to be widowed five years later. Marie’s sister-in-law, Clara Woolf (married to her brother Benjamin de Jongh), happened to have a brother who was qualified as a barrister and able to serve as executor of the estate.
