John Herbert, the child of John and Gladys (Kirk) Brundage, was born in Toronto on October 13, 1926. He is known primarily for

, a play written in 1964, the first commercial production of which in New York City in 1967 led to its publication, translation and extensive production world-wide. Herbert wrote many other plays, most of which remain unpublished. Indeed, the success of his best-known work overshadows his other contributions to Canadian theatre which, besides plays, include service as a director, designer, stage manager and, most importantly, artistic director of some of the country’s earliest professional theatre companies.

After leaving high school in 1943, Herbert worked in the advertising department of Eaton’s department store in downtown Toronto.
