One of the most original, most productive and most provocative Quebec playwrights of the 1960s and 70s, Robert Gurik, was born in Paris, France, in 1932 to parents of Hungarian origin and received his primary and secondary education there before immigrating to Canada at the age of 18. After studies at the Université de Montréal and Montreal Polytechnic he qualified as an engineer in 1957, practising the profession in the Montreal area for the following 15 years while also pursuing his growing interest in theatre.

His first text, a one-act satire entitled “Le Chant du poète” [“The Poet’s Song”] was performed in 1963, followed by other short texts, some published in one volume in 1974 as Sept Courtes Pièces [“Seven Short Plays”], each lasting from 5 to 20 minutes. But it
