English Canada’s first professional 20th century playwright to make a living from her writing, Patricia Joudry (1921-2000) was the widest internationally produced Canadian playwright from 1941 until the proliferation of indigenous professional theatres across the country beginning in the late 1960s. She wrote over 300 plays, of which approximately 250 were scripted for radio in Canada and the U.S. At a time when few works by female playwrights were produced, Joudry’s comedies and dramas on stage, radio and television criticized the often stifling nature of marriage, child education, religious teachings, social conventions and mindless consumerism.
