Born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, to George and Ida Schoemperlen, Diane Schoemperlen dates her interest in writing back to childhood when she would tell her mother stories that she invented while looking at cookbooks. After graduating from Lakehead University’s English program in 1976, Schoemperlen pursued a six-week writing course at the Banff Centre with W.O. Mitchell, Eli Mandel, Sylvia Fraser, and Alice Munro, and, around this same time, she published a number of short stories and poems in Canadian literary journals. She worked as a staff writer at the Banff Centre before moving to Canmore, Alberta, where she held an array of jobs: avalanche researcher, typesetter, newspaper reporter, and bank teller.
