Robert Crawford was born in Bellshill, Scotland in 1959. He spent much of his early life in and around Glasgow and he studied English at the University of Glasgow. After doing postgraduate work at Balliol College, Oxford, he returned to the University of Glasgow as a lecturer before moving to the University of St. Andrews where he is now Professor of Modern Scottish Literature and Head of the School of English. Crawford has published six volumes of his own verse as well as a number of works of criticism. Additionally, he has served as editor for a number of Scottish literary journals and international poetry magazines. In 1994 Crawford was recognized as a member of the “New Generation” of British Poets.
