Eleanor Davies (1590-1652) was a writer of over 60 prophetic works. Self-styled as “the Lady Eleanor”, she was born Eleanor Touchet, daughter of George Touchet and his first wife, Lucy Mervyn. Her father, who became eleventh Baron Audley and first earl of Castlehaven, had estates in England and Ireland. Eleanor Touchet was well educated and had an intense interest in religion, possibly fostered by spending time as a young woman in the staunchly Calvinist plantation of Ulster. She married twice: first, to Sir John Davies, Attorney General of Ireland, who was 20 years her senior, and, second, to Sir Archibald Douglas who was, like her father, a professional soldier.
