Born into a world in which automobiles were virtually unknown and the Wright Brothers’ first flight still a year away, Frank Waters lived to witness and write about some of the most striking harbingers of the modern age, from the development and testing of the world’s first atomic weapon to the evolution of the space shuttle program. Although he wrote novels, screenplays, essays, biographies, ethnographies, historical studies, and even a book on rocks and minerals, Waters is best known today as a writer of the American West, a region he lived in from the administration of Theodore Roosevelt to that of Bill Clinton.

Born on July 25, 1902 to Frank Jonathan Waters and May Ione Dozier Waters, Frank (his father went by Jonathan) had one younger sister, Naomi. He grew up in a middle-class
