Sir Peter Hall, his former co-director at the RSC, has called Peter Brook “the leading director of his generation”, and the list of fellow directors, of actors and of critics who support this evaluation is impressive. To name but three, the work of Ariane Mnouchkine, of Pina Bausch, and of Robert Wilson has been inspired by Brook. Famous actors he has worked with – among them such distinguished performers as Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud and Paul Scofield as well as Vivien Leigh and Irene Worth – have praised his rejuvenating influence on British Theatre. However, Brook’s impact on the theatre of our time reaches far beyond the British Isles, and it encompasses film and opera as well.
