Damien Wilkins was born on 25 August 1963 in Lower Hutt in the Wellington region. He was educated at Hutt Valley High School and Victoria University of Wellington, where he graduated with an Honours degree in English. He has travelled – an experience that has informed his earlier writing in particular – and worked as a university teacher and assistant editor. After the publication of his first book he attended Washington University, St Louis, where he completed an MFA in Creative Writing. He has written fiction, poetry, essays and reviews, as well as work for television and radio. In 2003 he was appointed to the permanent teaching staff of the International Institute of Modern Letters, the creative writing school at Victoria University of Wellington.
