Born in Semur-en-Auxois, Gabrielle Suchon spent the early part of her adult life as a nun in the convent of St. Catherine in her home-town. In 1666 she was granted permission to transfer to a convent at Langres, and it is possible that she turned this into an opportunity to travel to Rome in order to obtain permission to be released from her vows. An account of her life, published in 1745, claims that she travelled secretly to Rome, and that the Pope granted her the desired release, but that her relatives opposed it, and the parliament of Dijon required her to return to her monastery (Le Dœuff 1998; Bertolini 2000).
