Suzanna Arundhati Roy was born in Shillong, India, on 24 November 1961, to a Keralan mother and a Bengali father. After her parents' divorce, Arundhati and her mother Mary Roy moved to Aymanam, a small town in Kerala where Mary Roy ran a private school. Even though Roy left Aymanam at the age of 16, the childhood she spent there was one of her most important source of creativity. After leaving Kerala, Roy spent several years in a squatter's colony in Delhi making a living by collecting empty bottles. At the age of 21 she was accepted at the School of Architecture and Planning, where she met her first husband Gerald DaCunha. After their graduation, the couple moved to Goa.
