Alison Louise Kennedy was born on 22 October 1965 in Dundee, Scotland. She attended Warwick University where she graduated in theatre studies and drama in 1986. A.L. Kennedy’s first collection of short stories,

Night Geometry and the Garscadden Trains

, was published in 1991, earning her immediate national recognition. Although Kennedy has often proved reluctant to be categorised according to context or school of writing, she is frequently compared with other writers of the second Scottish literary Renaissance such as Alasdair Gray and James Kelman, whose form and linguistic experiments she finds inspirational.
