Alistair Campbell was the first significant New Zealand Polynesian poet, the first Polynesian to publish a volume of poetry in English, and, while it lasted, an important member of the informal Wellington Group of poets. He continued writing poetry up to his death in 2009, and by then had received several major awards, including the New Zealand Book Award for Poetry in 1982, the Arts Council Scholarship in Letters (1990), the Pacific Islands Artist’s Award (1997), an Honorary Doctor of Literature from Victoria University of Wellington (1999), an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (2005), and the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in Poetry (2005).
