Paul Cézanne (born 19 January 1839, Aix-en-Provence; died 22 October 1906, Aix-en-Provence) was a painter associated with the Impressionist movement and a pioneer of post-Impressionism.

He was the only son of Elisabeth Aubert and Louis-Auguste Cézanne, who also had two daughters. His father, a banker who made his fortune dealing hats, had accumulated enough wealth to ensure the financial security of the family. During his childhood, Cézanne attended the École Saint-Joseph and the Collège Bourbon in Aix, where he excelled in Classics and poetry and began his lifelong friendship with Émile Zola (1840–1902), future novelist and art critic.
