Makibefo (1999) is a black and white film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, set in Madagascar. In fact it is less an adaptation than a kind of anthropological experiment. British director Alexander Abela, with one colleague, traveled to Faux-Cap, a town on the southern point of Madagascar, where he created the film with the Antandroy, an isolated tribe of fishermen. All the roles in the film were played by Antandroy tribe members, with the exception of the framing character of the Storyteller.
