Historical Background

The story of South Tyrol is the story of migration, transnationality and ethnic conflict. It comprises a geographic area in the north of Italy (the autonomous province of Bolzano, which together with Trentino makes up the Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol) whose now-ethnic Austrian minority became “Italian” under forceful occupation after World War I as one of the problematic “unsettled settlements”. Fascism brought more extreme unsettlement for the former Austrians, now torn between a superimposed cult of Mussolini and enforced Italian patriotism, on the one hand, and relief promised by migration into Nazi-occupied German territories, on the other.
