Digitally remastered from the Original 35mm Nitrate Materials by the British Film Institute’s National Film and Television Archive, 1999.

This first cinematic Shakespearean adaptation by the British Mutoscope and Biograph Company (BMBC) now only survives in fragmentary form. The original film premiered at the Palace Theatre of Varieties on September 20, 1899. Its premiere ran concurrently with the opening night of Herbert Beerbohm Tree’s stage production at Her Majesty’s Theatre, from which the film derives.
