The Claridade Literary Movement started as a cultural and literary magazine, first published in 1936 in Mindelo (São Vicente, Cape Verde). At present, the literary production of this movement is a reference to Cape-verdean literature and also to its cultural and national identity.
The magazine, which was published sporadically between 1936 and 1966, survived many financial and political difficulties that explain the time-lapses between the nine published issues and also its political importance to Cape-verdean culture. It is also important to note that the publication suffered a lot of pressure from the fascist colonial rule of Salazar, the Portuguese dictator in charge during the publishing period (Creary, 2005, p. 181).
