The first Icelandic periodical,

Islandske Maaneds-Tidender

[Icelandic Monthly News], was launched on the island of Hrappsey in Breiðafjörður in the West of Iceland, in 1773, and published by the recent printing press on the island. A printing press was established on Hrappsey in 1773 due to the initiative of Ólafur Ólafsson who used the name Olavius (1741–1788) and was the first printing press in the country that was independent of the church. Olavius received permission from the King of Denmark to found a printing press in Iceland in 1772 and arrived with it in Stykkishólmur later that year.

The first issue of Islandske Maaneds-Tidender was for October 1773, sixteen pages in small book-format, and written in Danish, as the title implies. It was a news magazine. Page 1 carries,
