In April, US armed forces made a difficult landing on the island of Okinawa. The amphibious assault was defended heavily by the Japanese. During the three month assault, US forces sustained over 12,000 deaths and 36,000 other casualties. Japanese forces, for their part, lost over 100,000 men. Such high casualty rates made the Battle of Okinawa one of the bloodiest during the Battle of the Pacific.
