In the 1956 presidential election, the Democrats chose Adlai Stevenson as their presidential nominee. Senator Estes Kefauver was selected as the running mate. However, the overwhelming popularity of Eisenhower propelled him to a landslide re-election, the most one-sided race since 1936. The Eisenhower-Nixon ticket won more than 57 percent of the vote and won the electoral college vote by a margin of 457 to 73.
