Telstar 1, a group of satellites which ushered in an entirely new age in electronic communications, was launched on 10 July 1962. It operated successfully until February 1963. Telstar 1 facilitated the first transmission of television pictures across the Atlantic Ocean. Relay stations in England and France received the transmissions. Telstar 1 also allowed telephone, telegraph, telephoto, and facsimile transmissions to cross the ocean.
