Over-extended by its military operations in Bengal, the East India Company appealed to the British government for financial support to stave off bankruptcy. This request gave opportunity to the opponents of Robert Clive to call for investigation by parliamentary committee. Various instances of personal corruption were exposed, but Clive was exonerated and praised for rendering “great and meritorious services to his country”. Clive nonetheless killed himself in 1774.
