Warren Hastings, governor-general of India, assisted the viceroy (vizier) of Oudh in his dispute with the neighbouring Rohillas. In the Hastings impeachment proceedings in 1788 Edmund Burke would contend that Hastings had hired out East India Company troops for financial considerations and condoned atrocities. Hastings would reply that he had sought to bolster Oudh as a buffer state between Bengal and the Maratha federation. (See First Maratha War).
