The first transatlantic co-axial telephone cable was laid between Clarenville (Newfoundland) and Oban (Scotland) in 1956, a distance of 2240 miles or 3584 kilometres. Transatlantic telephone calls reached 3.7m by 1960 and increased encouraged the laying of six more co-axial cables by 1983. Additional fibre-optic capacity was laid in 1988, supplemented by geostationary satellites in the same years.
