In 1966, amid a period of upheaval and re-evaluation in American society, the National Organization for Women was established (NOW). NOW was founded by a small cadre of feminists to promote women's equal rights and challenge discrimination in modern America, especially in the workplace. Boasting some 250,000 members, since the 1960s, NOW has focused on passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, child care, abortion, pregnancy leave, comparable-worth legislation, and pension rights.
