On 10 October 1973, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigned and pleaded no contest to a charge of tax evasion of payments made to him by contactors when he was governor of Maryland. Two days later, Gerald R. Ford became the first appointed vice president under the 25th Amendment. He was sworn in on 6 December.
