The literary prize is not a new phenomenon. The international Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded annually since 1901, the Prix Goncourt in France since 1903, the Pulitzer Prizes in America since 1917. These were among the first and remain the leading contemporary literary prizes. National prizes for fiction now abound: in the United Kingdom they include the Whitbread, Somerset Maugham, Betty Trask, Orange, Hawthornden, and James Tait Black prizes; in Canada the Governor General's Literary Awards; in Australia the Miles Franklin Award; in New Zealand the Mansfield Prize; in Italy the Premier Napoli; in Japan the Naoki Prize and the Akutagawa Prize; and there are many more.
