In this year, Pope Gregory III appointed Egbert the first archbishop of York. The creation of a northern metropolitan see to balance Canterbury’s influence had long been sought in Northumbria; part of Bede’s aim in writing the
Ecclesiastical Historyhad been to make the case for such an arrangement.
