Queen Anne's reign represented a short-lived return to Stuart rule in Britain, and a transitional period between the rule of the House of Orange and that of the House of Hanover. This was because she succeeded her heirless brother-in-law King William III in 1702, but died childless herself in 1714, after it had been decreed that the throne would go to the Elector of Hanover (later King George I) if Anne died without issue. Anne was pregnant many times, but outlived all of her children. Generally, she was sympathetic to the High Church Tories, themselves distrustful of religious dissenters and of the Whig money-men who had gained influence during William's reign.
