The Sea Cook, Stevenson’s first novel was given its published title by James Henderson, the editor of the children’s periodical
Young Folks, in which the story first appeared
between October 1881 and January 1882. It was published in book form the following year by Cassell & Company, Ltd. Although it failed to make an impact on its initial appearance, its popularity soon grew and it has come to be regarded not only as a classic of children’s literature, but also of adventure fiction more generally, its popularity having been increased by numerous adaptations and the widespread cultural influence of its depiction of pirates.
