(1908) is one of Canadian writer Sara Jeannette Duncan's most significant novels. The text was initially serialised in

The Queen

beginning in January 1908, and was subsequently published by Macmillan in New York and Methuen in London later that year. The American edition was subtitled,

A Canadian Girl in London

which indicates the focus of the text. Duncan had spent a prolonged period in London during 1906 and 1907, when the novel is set, away from her husband and home in India, so she was attuned to the politics of Edwardian London, particularly politics that concerned imperial relations, the subject of the novel. The backdrop to the text is the aftermath of Joseph Chamberlain's campaign for imperial federation through preferential tariffs. There are many references to this issue…
