Although

Niebla

[Mist] was published in 1914, scholars agree that it must have been drafted in 1907. Very few editorial changes were introduced in the hand-written manuscript kept in the Unamuno Museum of the University of Salamanca. The first page of the manuscript, which bore the date 1907, went missing and no ecdotic analysis has been carried out to determine the exact date.

Mist

is possibly Unamuno’s greatest novel and also the most acclaimed Spanish Modernist novel, remarkable in its philosophical depth, stylistic virtuosity and highly complex intertextual nature. Its manifold literary innovations set it apart as perhaps the most important Spanish novel of the twentieth century —
