focuses on Hazelton-on-Hudson, a progressive community in upstate New York, where most of the more affluent residents are professionals who belong to the Unitarian Church and the ACLU. The satiric possibilities are rather obvious, for these are people who feel that they are actively engaging with the issues of the day while their community and just about every aspect of their daily lives keeps them at a safe remove from the tensions and conflicts disrupting other lives. The focal characters who seem to represent this affluent, professional class are Ian McCullough and his wife Glynnis. Ian is a demographer, a senior fellow at the Institute for Independent Research, a highly regarded institute for social research, and the editor of the
