The working relationship between Hélène Cixous – best known as a feminist scholar, critic, and novelist – and the Théâtre du Soleil (the celebrated experimental theatre company led by Ariane Mnouchkine and based in the Cartoucherie, a former munitions factory on the outskirts of Paris) is one of the most prolific in contemporary French theatre.

Drums on the Dam], which was first performed in 1999, was the fourth play written by Cixous for the theatre company, and was arguably the most critically successful of their collaborations, having won three Molière theatre awards.
