The play
IchundIch. Eine theatralische Tragödie in sechs Akten, einem Vor- und einem Nachspiel[
I and I. A Theatrical Tragedy in Six Acts, a Prelude and an Epilogue], written between 1937 and 1941, reflects a traumatic period in the life of the Jewish writer Else Lasker-Schüler. She had been forced into exile by the Hitler government, one of many involved in the mass exodus of Jewish and dissident artists. Lasker-Schüler emigrated to Switzerland at first and went from there to Palestine. She lived in Jerusalem until her death. Aside from a personal reading for a small private audience by the writer herself, the play was not published until 1970 (in the
Jahrbuch der Deutschen Schillergesellschaft, book publication 1980) and not performed until 1979, long after her death. It was…
