Shakespeare Wallah is a Merchant Ivory Productions’ film released in 1965. The screenplay was written by James Ivory and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and is loosely based on the British actor Geoffrey Kendal’s diaries. Kendal’s diaries recount his experiences of travelling throughout India, performing Shakespeare’s plays with his Shakespeareana Company in 1947, although the chronology of the film is set in the broader context of postcolonial India.
