The Dodsley brothers published two versions of

Select Fables

: an ordinary version, printed in London for the use of schools, price three shillings; and an elegant version, printed by the celebrated, Birmingham type-founder and printer, John Baskerville (1706-75), price five shillings. The Dodsleys published a second edition in 1764 and James Dodsley published a third, in 1776, 12 years after his brother’s death. Many reprints of this edition appeared in England and the United States through the remainder of the eighteenth, and first quarter of the nineteenth, century.

After his Select Collection of Old Plays, 12 Volumes, 1744-45, and A Collection of Poems by Several Hands, 6 Volumes, 1748-58, Robert Dodsley’s Select Fables of Aesop and Other Fabulists, 1761, is probably his best-known
