Amy Judith Levy was a poet and novelist whose work critiqued Victorian society’s constraints on gender, religion, and intellectual ambition. Born into an assimilated Jewish family in London, Levy demonstrated early literary talent, publishing her first poem at the age of thirteen. Her education at Brighton and Hove High School, a feminist institution, nurtured her liberal outlook and commitment to challenging societal norms. After becoming the second Jewish woman to enrol at Cambridge, Levy encountered both antisemitism and sexism, experiences that profoundly influenced her writing. Ultimately, she left Cambridge without completing her degree and eventually returned to London, where she formed friendships with prominent feminists and intellectuals.
