Gorbachevizm

was published in New York in 1988 as a collection of essays, an extended version of an earlier work which had first appeared in French in 1987 under the title

Le Gorbatchévisme ou les pouvoirs d’une illusion.

Unlike the French version, it shares no fewer than 32 ‘essays’ with another work published in 1988 in German (

Katastroika. Gorbatchows Potemkinsche Doerfer).

In structure Gorbachevizm is similar to Kommunizm kak real’nost’ [The Reality of Communism]. It consists of 33 short essays together with a preface and a conclusion. The structure is thus typical of a Zinov’ev work and facilitates his preferred pointilliste approach to his subject matter. On the other hand, many of these essays can be grouped together under general headings relating to various aspects
