David Mamet’s
Oleannareceived its theatrical debut in Cambridge, Massachusetts on May 1, 1992, in an associated effort by The Back Bay Theater Company and the American Repertory Theater. The play’s New York premiere, also with the Back Bay Theater Company, took place at the Orpheum Theater and opened on October 25 of the same year. In both productions, Mamet “regulars”—fellow Goddard College and Chicago theater alum, William H. Macy, and Mamet’s wife, Rebecca Pigeon—assumed the play’s two roles, those of John and Carol, a university professor and a student in his class, respectively. The play was subsequently translated to film in 1994, with Mamet as director and Macy starring opposite Deborah Eisenstadt.
