A scholarly edition of
The Lottery of Marriagewill be released by Pickering and Chatto in 2011 as part of a series of Frances Trollope’s “Widow and Wedlock Novels” (the quotations are taken from this edition).
Lottery is one of the least known and published works by Trollope, having being printed only four times (1848 and 1849 by Colburn and then 1857 and 1862 by J.C. Brown) and never outside of London. Unlike the majority of Trollope’s works, and especially the Widow Barnaby series, this novel was not serialized, nor was it published in America. However, one of Trollope’s biographers, Pamela Neville-Sinton, considers it to be Trollope’s best novel (263). A reviewer for the New Monthly Magazine recognizes the novel as having “prizes ... with inviting and seductive colours”
