) was published in 1975, the time was ripe for a feminist treatment of women’s experiences. In 1971, journalist Alice Schwarzer had organized “Ich habe abgetrieben” (I have had an abortion), the campaign against the West German antiabortion statute – an event that is credited with launching the second-wave women’s movement in Germany. In the wake of the student revolts of the late 1960s, many women had formed self-help groups on behalf of women’s emancipation, which the male-dominated left had dismissed as a “secondary contradiction”. Stefan was a founding member of one such group, Brot und Rosen (Bread and Roses), and a co-author of its first publication,
