Georges Bernanos (1888-1948), a prominent polemicist and French Catholic novelist in the first half of the 20th century. Born in Paris and educated at the Sorbonne, he became known as an effective journalist for the conservative Action Française. After suffering a serious wound in World War I he became an inspector for an insurance company and traveled broadly in Northern France and Picardy on company assignments. In his journalistic work he supported the anti-materialist, anti-modernist, pro-nationalist and mildly authoritarian royalist predilection of the right-wing Action Française.

Subsequent to Papal condemnation of Action Française in 1926, Bernanos began to drift away from its editorial guidelines and broke with it in 1932. He continued, however, to sympathize with the catholic
